Between Fantasy and Reality: Image, Representation, and History 2007 Pacific Coast Branch-American Historical Association

The Program Committee for the 2007 Pacific Coast Branch-American Historical Association (PCB-AHA) annual meeting invites proposals for panels and papers on all historical themes and time periods, but with special consideration to be given to those that fit with the theme, “Between Fantasy and Reality: Image, Representation, and History.” Interdisciplinary panels are welcomed, as are panels composed of or including graduate students.

The PCB-AHA is the western branch of the American Historical Association. It serves members of the AHA living in the Western States of the United States and the Western Provinces of Canada. The organization brings together historians from all geographical, chronological, and topical specializations. The Annual Meeting theme reflects the breadth and variety of interests held by the PCB-AHA membership.

While the Committee will consider proposals on all historical subjects, we especially encourage those related to the general theme of the conference. Such topics may include but are not limited to papers on image, symbol, and representation in visual and/or textual forms. This might encompass such areas as the history of symbols of locality, region, and nation; forms of visual culture such as art, photography, film, and television; religious or public iconography; the creation and development of hero cults and other mythological constructs; the interaction of human beings with images; and the use of images as historical sources.

Submissions are encouraged for sessions, roundtable discussions, workshops, and individual papers. All submissions should be sent by email. When submitting a session proposal, include an abstract that outlines the purpose of the session and designate one panelist as the contact person. Each paper proposal, whether individual or part of a session, should include a one-page abstract, along with a one-page c.v., and an address, phone number, and e-mail for each participant. Please indicate audio/visual needs in your proposal. The Program Committee assumes all listed individuals have agreed to participate.

The deadline for all submissions is January 15, 2007.
