CALL FOR PAPERS
2006 Film and History League Conference
“The Documentary Tradition” Dallas 8-12 November 2006
www.filmandhistory.org
AREA: Asian Documentary
Like other ethnic minority groups, the representation of Asians in literature and film including non-fiction film has been stereotyped and the practice continues to this day. The issue spills over to problems with access to production, distribution and exhibition and when these hurdles have been circumvented, to concerns about the appropriateness of the themes represented in the works of art.
Submissions for panels and individual presentations on all aspects of Asian non-fiction film are welcome. Subjects can be diverse and can include the following:
- Analysis of particular films or filmmakers whether based in the US or in Asia
- Theories of the documentary film from an Asian perspective
- The thematic particularity of the Asian documentary
- Challenges for the Asian documentary maker
- Issues of diversity and integration in the Asian documentary
- Issues of gender, race and class in the Asian Documentary
- The documentary tradition in Asian countries
- Cultural themes in the Asian documentary
- Biography and the Asian documentary
- The Asian documentary tradition as part of the American documentary tradition
-Politics and the Asian documentary
