Art History Lecture: Stanley K. Abe "Looking East: John D. Rockefeller, Jr., Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, Lucy Truman Aldrich and Chinese Art Collecting, 1910–1930."
While the Rockefeller family collected Asian art from the turn of the century, the generation of John, Jr., Abby, and Lucy turned that collecting into a sustained interest. Professor Abe highlights their interest in Chinese art, especially Buddhist sculpture, in the period of 1910–1930. Based on extensive research in the Rockefeller Archive Center, we follow the Rockefellers from New York to Peking (Beijing) in their travels and purchases among the world of collectors and dealers.
