We are currently seeking contributions for a panel titled "Animals, Colonialism, and the Atlantic World," for the fall 2006 annual meeting of the American Society for Ethnohistory in Williamsburg, Virginia (November 1-5). We welcome any papers that deal broadly with the histories of animals (mammals, insects, fish, birds, etc.) as they relate politically, economically, culturally, and/or medically to the Atlantic World from ca. contact to the early 19th century. We are especially interested in papers that address the histories of real animals, rather than those that focus on animals as symbols or representations. Some potential topics might include: the role of animals in conquest and colonization; the commodification of animals in Atlantic world economies; histories of hunting; zoos and menageries in the pre-contact Americas and colonial world; animals in criminal and Inquisition cases; ethno-veterinary practices; and animal-human experimental biology and medicine. We hope to publish an edited volume on this topic based in part on the papers presented at this panel session.
Those interested should email a one-page proposal and a one-page CV, including contact information, by May 25, 2006 to both Martha Few (Dept. of History, Univ. of Arizona): mfew@u.arizona.edu and Zeb Tortorici (Dept. of History, UCLA): zebbie@gmail.com.
