Hidden Drawers
Second thematic issue of Conserveries mémorielles http://www.celat.ulaval.ca/histoire.memoire/revue.htm
In the course of our research, whether based on archival, textual, iconographic, or audio documents or statements made by persons we’ve encountered, we sometimes come across material as moving as it is unusable. How many texts, archival or iconographic documents, transcribed interviews, audio or video recordings that have been collected end up being rejected despite their interest, their force, or their evocative power, at the risk of ending up in “history’s wastebin” having been rejected for utilitarian considerations, a plague of research undertakings.
Everyone has their secret garden of discoveries waiting to be cultivated, texts and images in the rough from the extraterritoral areas of our research rejected pitilessly by our ambition. The next issue of Conserveries mémorielles that we are launching seeks to bring to light these orphaned texts, which, paradoxically, strike us with their energy and their concealed power but which need to be placed in a suitable context. Each document’s interest will be explained in an accompanying study. The scientific work will lie in the putting in context of the document which until then had only subjective interest.
