The abstract values, principles and normative ideals that characterize contemporary philosophical debates about social justice often appear of little immediate, practical relevance to real world policy dilemmas. Reflecting these concerns the 2006 conference of the Association of Social and Legal Philosophy (ALSP) focuses on the complex relation between philosophical and practical analysis in relation to concerns of domestic and international social justice. Featuring contributions from philosophers, legal scholars and social scientists, the conference discusses both theoretical concerns and practical applications to questions of social justice in contemporary society.
Plenary Sessions:
• Russell Hardin (New York University) delivers the 2006 Austin Lecture on "The Legal Order As an Unintended Consequence"
• Philippe Van Parijs (Catholic University of Louvain and Harvard University) and Doris Schroeder (University of Central Lancashire) debate aspects of global ethics
• Jonathan Wolff (University College London) and Avner de-Shalit (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) enter in critical exchange with John Baker (UCD Dublin), Paula Casal (University of Reading), Richard Hull (National University of Ireland, Galway) and Ingrid Robeyns (University of Amsterdam) about their forthcoming book on "Disadvantage" (forthcoming 2006 with Oxford University Press).
