POPULAR WESTERNS: NEW SCHOLARSHIP
A Special Issue of the Canadian Review of American Studies
Westerns are back . . . again—whether queer, camp, crude, or conservative. A gay western penned by a woman wins big at the Oscars. Shocked cable viewers are riveted by the gritty underbelly of Deadwood, Dakota Territory. Scholars unearth popular wests—by Aboriginal, Chicana/o, African-American, and Anglo-American writers—undreamt by L’Amour and Grey. Yet George W. Bush wins big with western myth-making too.
This special issue responds to this proliferation of new and different visions of the popular west. We conceptualize the form broadly in terms of genre, period, approach, and geographical reach. We invite new scholarship on any aspect of the popular western, historical or contemporary, in fiction, film, performance, television, or new media.
