The first explorers called it the Valley of the Oaks, el Llano or Valle de los Robles. Where are the oaks now? But historical and physiographic evidence can give indications as to where they once were, along with many other things that have changed in the Santa Clara Valley. Join us for a talk describing a gallop, or at least a lope, northward through the valley in the 18th and early 19th centuries, beginning with native-built and Mission-built bridges over the Pájaro headwaters, and ending with a possible Russian princess and the Palo Alto tree.
