This conference will explore the relationship between Jews and blood from different disciplinary and methodological perspectives. While we welcome papers dealing with the familiar (e.g., blood libel), we especially would like submissions about relatively unexplored themes. These might include, but are of course not limited to the following:
-new work on limpieza de sangre
-blood and Jewish folk beliefs and practices
-Jews and vampires
-blood and healing
-blood and Jewish feminist thought
-comparative work (blood in Judaism and Christianity, Jews and African-Americans,etc.)
-the role of blood in Zionist narratives
-blood in the mystical Jewish tradition
-the impact of Harvey's discovery on Jewish hermeneutics
This conference will result in a published volume. Participants, therefore, should be committed to submitting publishable versions of their essays no later than June 30, 2007. (All reasonable travel costs will be covered, as will accommodation and meals.)
Send an abstract or conference proposal (no more than two double-spaced pages) and a C.V. by August 20, 2006 to: Professor Mitchell Hart, Department of History, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32611
