In honor of the bicentennial of American actor Edwin Forrest (1806-1872), the Department of History of the College of Mount Saint Vincent invites scholars from all disciplines to join us for a one-day conference on Saturday, November 4, 2006.
Applicants are encouraged to submit papers or complete panels on any subject relating to Forrest’s life and times (they need not address Forrest himself), but we are especially seeking work that addresses the following issues:
American theater in the nineteenth century
Class conflict and riots in nineteenth-century New York City
Class formation in nineteenth-century New York City
Forrest’s life and work
Immigration and working-class culture in nineteenth-century New York City
Elite cultures in nineteenth-century New York City
Riverdale and the Bronx in the nineteenth century
Proposals may be for single papers, which would include an abstract as well as the presenter’s CV, or for complete panels, which would include abstracts and CVs for all participants as well as a brief description of the panel’s relationship to the conference subject.
The College of Mount Saint Vincent is located on the lands once occupied by Forrest’s Riverdale estate, and Fonthill Castle, constructed by Forrest between 1849 and 1852, still stands on campus, overlooking the Hudson River.
For any questions or assistance with submissions, you can contact Dr. Daniel Opler by phone at (718) 405-3235 or by e-mail at daniel.opler@mountsaintvincent.edu.
Paper proposals should be submitted to Dr. Opler by e-mail by June 15, 2006.
