The organising commitee for the conference "Testimonial Texts, Stories, Lives and Memories" to be held at Universidad Pedagógica Nacional (UPN) in Mexico City june 1 - 5 2006 is seeking two further panelists for a special session/ "sub-conference" dedicated to "Nation-Building, Politics and Historical Memory in Larin America" that will take place during the conference.
The session will consist of 4 panels, each with 3 or 4 presentations. The papers already included in the program for this special session represent a wide variety of new and innovative research on topics as diverse as new perspectives on the assasination of the Mexican president Álvaro Obregón, the surpression of indigenous self-government institutions in post-idenpendent Latin America, and representations of Brasilian presidents in news paper cartoons.
Proposals for this special session should address the general conference theme which is the power of storytelling in the construction of memories, collective identity formations, and oral traditions.
The conference "Testimonial Texts, Stories, Lives and Memories" will interrogate storytelling, memories and identity constructions from a wide range of perspectives, definitions and in their manifold cultural and social manifestations. The program is organised in a large number of special thematic sessions and subconferences covering a large and diverse series of topics extending from indigenous oral traditions in Mexico, the “Urban Space as Text” to “Disabilities and Visibilities”.
We welcome submissions from all branches of the social sciences, humanities, as well as the arts. Graduate students are encouraged to participate.
Papers will be considered on related themes and topics from a wide range of perspectives. 500 word abstracts should be submitted to the organising committee in English, Castilian, German or French by 1. March 2006. The conference languages will be English and Castilian.
Interpretations of the conference theme ranging from the predictable to the surprising are encouraged.
