The non-profit Civil War Preservation Trust is holding its fifth annual free Civil War Teachers Institute. It will be held July 28-30, 2006 in Richmond, VA.
Education professionals who work with students in grades 4-12 are encouraged to attend. Professors who teach at the community college and survey course level will also benefit from the institute. Activities support professional development contact hour requirements.
CWPT is teaming up with Virginia Tech to provide this program. Eminent historians James I. Robertson, Jr. and William C. Davis are among our featured speakers. Teachers will have their choice of focused workshops on Friday and Sunday. Our high point will be the field trip on Saturday, when teachers choose either Pamplin Historic Park/ National Museum of the Civil War Soldier OR Petersburg National Battlefield. In addition, we will have period entertainment on Saturday evening.
To register, teachers should e-mail jrosenberry@civilwar.org or call 301.665.1400 X 204. They will then receive an application form to be returned to the address below.
There is no cost, but there is a $50 deposit upon registration which is refundable after teachers attend the program. Only teachers will be accepted for the program – sorry, no non-teaching spouses or children will be accepted.
Meals are included, but teachers are responsible for their own lodging and transportation. A block of rooms is being held for us at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Richmond River District, which is also hosting the program. Teachers must ask for the Civil War Preservation Trust Teacher Institute group to get the discounted rate.
