I International Conference on Nation and Idenity in XIX and XX Centuries Literature in English. Catholic University San Antonio, Murcia, Spain. 14-16 September 2006. The questions of representation of national identity, and the Russian nation in particular have been extensively studied in recent years. This research examines the representation as a construction of images in the written discourse. National identity is seen as a twofold formation: it is represented as enlightened community and as a turbulent Other. Moreover, its duality is revealed when self- representation from "inside" on the one hand (i.e. how the nation views itself), and the representation of it from "outside" on the other (i.e. how the nation is seen by other nations)are constructed.
