CALL FOR AUTHORS
One Day in History Series:
April 12, 1861 and September 11, 2001
We are inviting academic editorial contributors to the next two titles in a new history reference encyclopedia series to be published by HarperCollins and Smithsonian Books in 2007. The series is called “One Day in History,” and each book in the series focuses on one key date in history. The next two titles are April 12, 1861 and September 11, 2001.
These one-volume encyclopedias will be marketed and sold to bookstores as well as academic and public libraries worldwide. The scope of each encyclopedia title comprises 100 or more articles that delineate and explain the people, places, events, chronology, and ramifications of the specific date. Each volume puts the key date in perspective by including introductory articles and post-date analysis (the effects of the date’s events). In addition, in a “you are there” perspective, the titles describe for the reader what it was like to be on the scene of a pivotal day in history. Besides descriptions of the historical events of the day, articles on daily life, religion, recreation and leisure, and education all relate specific aspects of cultural life on the date. Biographical entries focus on major participants in the crucial events of the day.
Each article, ranging from 500 to 3000 words, is signed by the contributor. The General Editor for the series is Dr. Rodney P. Carlisle, Professor Emeritus, Rutgers University, who will review all the articles for academic consistency.
If you are interested in contributing to the encyclopedias, it can be a very notable publication addition to your resume and broaden your publishing credits. There is also a small honorarium paid for each article, $20 to $75, depending on article length. For this submission, articles are due June 1, 2006 (firm).
The list of available articles is already prepared, and as a next step we e-mail you the article list (Word file) from which you can select topics that best fit your expertise and interests. Additionally, you will receive Style Guidelines that detail article specifications and honoraria payments.
If you would like to contribute to building truly outstanding history reference titles with the One Day in History series, please contact me by the e-mail information below. Please provide a brief summary of your background—experienced writers preferred. Also please indicate which title you are interested in: April 12 or September 11 or both. Thanks very much.
