Dear Colleagues,
I am hoping to organize a panel at the January 2007 AHA (in Atlanta) that will take a comparative approach to the end-of-empire experience of the Ottoman, Habsburg, Russian, and Chinese empires. I am particularly (though not exclusively) interested in papers that relate to questions of imperial citizenship, imperial nationhood, and imperial public spheres.
My own work deals with Palestine in the late Ottoman Empire, and explores the articulation of and struggles over an Ottoman ‘people-nation’ in the aftermath of the 1908 Young Turk revolution.
If you are interested in participating, please send me a note with a short description of your work by February 1. A more detailed panel proposal will need to be turned in by February 15.
Thank you,
Michelle Campos
