The Melville Society Panel of the MLA meeting 27-30 December in Philadelphia solicits two-page paper proposals on the subject of Melville's presence in the popular imagination in any medium (film, comics, graphic novels, television, radio, etc.), especially papers that address the meaning of Melville the writer as an icon and the relevance of his works as popular texts (Moby-Dick, Billy Budd, Bartleby, etc.).
