Call for Papers: Civil War and the Homefront in the Mid-Atlantic Border Region.

The Catoctin Center for Regional Studies in Frederick, Maryland, invites proposals for a regional history conference on the Civil War and the homefront in the Mid-Atlantic border region. This conference is funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities, and is part of a larger project aimed at enhancing public understanding of the rich Civil War history, events, and sites in the area including central Maryland, south central Pennsylvania, northern Virginia, and northeastern West Virginia. The conference will be held October 13-14, 2006, at Frederick Community College in Frederick, Maryland. The Catoctin Center requests proposals covering the totality of the Civil War experience in this region, spanning military, homefront, African-American, civil liberties, and other issues. Potential topics include (but are not limited to) John Brown’s raid at Harpers Ferry; military actions at Antietam, Gettysburg, Monocacy, and other sites; slavery, emancipation, and African-American soldiers; suspension of civil liberties in Maryland; divided loyalties in a border region; and post-war tensions and remembrance. Scholars, preservation specialists, students, and others interested in presenting papers or participating in workshops, panel discussions, or other types of sessions are invited to submit a one-page proposal, a short biographical sketch, and contact information by May 1, 2006. The proposal should include a title, outline or brief abstract, and any equipment and/or software needs for the presentation. Selected presentations will be published following the conference.
