In nonindustrial farming communities, "the commons" refers to a plot of land that all farmers in the community can share. The commons is also a metaphor, referring to any resource available to an entire group. This new workgoup thus becomes a virtual commons -- a space to discuss practical issues relating to the achievement of sustainability and human equality, on equal turf.
