I am interested in joining or organizing a panel for the January 2007 AHA meeting in Atlanta, on the themes of academic freedom, institutional culture and intellectual history.
A session might tentatively be titled: "Academic culture in repressive states."
My own interest is in these themes as related to mainstream academic culture in South Africa during the apartheid era, with particular reference to the "advantaged" universities. It would be great to link up with historians with interests in aspects of intellectual history in "unsettled times".
