I hope to submit a panel to the upcoming Annual Meeting of the Mid-America American Studies Association, to be held
April 7-8, 2006, in St. Louis, Missouri and hosted by Saint Louis University.
The theme of this year's conference is AMERICAN PUBLIC CULTURES: SPACE, PERFORMANCE, AND IDENTITY.
My intention is to examine religion, protest, and activism. My own presentation will be an examination of the "love campaigns" (pickets) of Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, KS, pastored by Fred Phelps. Co-panelists might consider issues of religion and protest, religion and spectacle, religion and performance, religious displays, religion and public art, religion and media relations, religion and public space, and religion and activism, or related topics.
Please email me with a 250 word abstract an a one-page CV if you are interested in this topic. The MAASA deadline is January 15, so I would like to have all materials by January 13 to assemble them into a submission.
