"Enemies at the Gates?" is the title of our panel for the ASA conference "The United States from Inside and out: Transnational American Studies." It seeks to explore how the Cold War affected the relationship between immigrants from fascist countries and Americans after a war that had positioned them as ultimate enemies to each other. What did it mean to be an immigrant from a fascist country to the United States during the beginnings of the Cold War? What did it mean for Americans to allow immigrants from these countries into their midst? How were these meanings reflective of larger geopolitical concerns? How did these immigrants affect and contest America’s self-image? The first paper will grapple with the role of the Cold War in Italian Americans mobilization against the restriction of the Quota Acts. It will focus on how the American Committee on Italian Migration, along with other ethnic organizations, presented the need for immigration reform as an integral part of the United States campaign against communism. The second paper investigates how different representations have negotiated the meaning of the immigration of German scientists and their families after World War II under Operation Paperclip. We are looking for a third paper that relates to any of the questions raised above. Papers focusing on immigrants from countries other than Germany and Italy are particularly welcome.
Please email a 250-word abstract and your CV to Monique Laney at monique@ku.edu by January 1, 2006. If you are interested in chairing this panel, please contact us by January 10, 2006.
