The theme of the Conference is "Hip Hop's Defiant Divas (Then and Now)" and we are seeking abstracts for papers on the most influential women in Hip Hop culture (broadly defined, national and international). Abstracts should be 200 words and must explicitly state why the chosen figure is significant and how she has influenced Hip Hop culture. Papers should focus on individual women (or female groups) and should consider their lives, work, and impact on Hip Hop culture. Papers should also situate these women's contributions to Hip Hop within a cultural, historical, and/or philosophical context. While most women featured will be rappers and music artists, we also take seriously other contributions to Hip Hop. The Conference is interdisciplinary and we are looking for papers from professors, graduate students, and/or journalists who take Hip Hop Studies seriously. The Conference dates are April 6-8, 2006 and it will be held at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. Keynote Speaker: Raquel RIvera (author of NY Ricans in the Hip Hop Zone).
