Seeking panelists who are re-thinking the meanings and functions of pastoralism in the history of American culture for a Dialogue/Roundtable panel at the 2006 American Studies Association annual national meeting. Topics may include the historiographic or pedagogical use of Leo Marx’s Machine in the Garden, applications of Raymond Williams’ sense of the pastoral structure of feeling in The Country and the City, or analyses taken from other significant works in the fields of American Studies and Cultural Studies. Also of interest are reflections by scholars who have conscientiously decided to refuse pastoralism as an explanatory device. Presenters whose work is both historically-grounded and theoretically-engaged are especially welcome; any period or field of research is acceptable, as an interdisciplinary panel would be ideal. Please submit 500-word abstracts and brief CVs to Robin Veder, Penn State Harrisburg, at rmv10@psu.edu by January 6, 2006.
