The Grupo de Pesquisa “População e Economia de Minas Gerais” invites members and colleagues to submit paper or research report proposals for the 1st International History Workshop on Population and Economy in Minas Gerais, to be held on December 14 and 15, 2005, at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais. The objective of the workshop is to create a forum in which participants can debate methodological and research approaches to the study of the economic, social and demographic history of Minas Gerais under slavery and compare their findings with those of other scholars in the field. Though limited to the study of a specific geographical region, the different research topics of current members, varying from the development of a peripheral local economy to the demographic patterns of family and community formation among slave and free persons of African origin and descent, offer important parallels to studies in the fields of Atlantic history and African Diaspora. In that sense, the academic and intellectual contribution of the workship transcends the geographical boundaries of its main subject.
Though limited to works on the history of Minas Gerais under slavery, in an interest to encourage wide participation this year’s workshop will not be restricted to any particular topic. Materials should be submitted to the workshop organizers by November 30, 2005.
