The nationalization of the Suez Canal in 1956 triggered one of the gravest international crises since the Second World War. The fiftieth anniversary of the Suez crisis in 2006 presents an ideal opportunity to re-visit and re-assess this seminal episode in post-war history. Moreover, at a time when the Middle East once again holds the world’s attention, a re-examination of Suez, and its contemporary relevance, is particularly appropriate. Papers are welcome on all aspects of the Suez crisis, its causes and consequences. Of special interest are contributions on the international context and repercussions of Suez, but domestic perspectives are also encouraged. The conference will be held at the University of Hull’s Maritime Historical Studies Centre on 26 July 2006.
