I am looking for participants (panelists, commentator, chair) for a proposed panel for the upcoming ASA conference in Oakland, CA, October 12-16, 2006. The title of the upcoming annual meeting is "The United States from Inside and Out: Transnational American Studies."
http://www.georgetown.edu/crossroads/AmericanStudiesAssn/annualmeeting/ASA2006/cfp2006.htm
I am organizing a panel that combines transnational frameworks with the study of visual and material culture, with a particular focus on intersectional analyses of race, class, gender, ethnicity, sexuality, disability, religion, age, etc. Visual and material representations have a particular effect in the realm of transnational exchange and need to be at the forefront of understanding the influence of US culture and its interplay with other cultures around the world. Interdisciplinary proposals that incorporate a variety of methodologies and theoretical approaches from history, art history, sociology, anthropology, among others, are more than welcome.
Please contact Isabell Cserno at cserno@umd.edu fur further information.
If you wish to participate as a panelist, please provide a one-paragraph abstract of your paper topic. If you wish to serve as the chair and/or commentator, please provide a one-paragraph explanation why you would like to serve as the chair and/or commentator on this session. Also, please submit a one-page resume with your contact information. Send these items as word attachments to cserno@umd.edu by latest November 15 (earlier submission is welcome and encouraged). The final deadline for submission to the ASA is January 27, 2006.
