We are seeking to add participants and papers to a conference at the University of Chicago to be held May 19-20, 2006 on the topic of law and gender in the Japanese empire, 1868-1945, and also during the short postwar period related to the end of empire, 1945-1950. The conference will circulate article-length papers by participants in advance, with the aim of the timely publication of a volume of essays on this topic. We are particularly interested in soliciting proposals from scholars whose papers will address issues of law that intersect with: youth and family, sexual violence, prostitution, abortion, and colonialism. If interested, please send a 500-word abstract of a proposed paper by e-mail attachment to Professor Susan Burns, Dept. of History, University of Chicago (slburns@uchicago.edu) by November 10, 2005.
