Annual Webster Lecture: The Astronomy of Ancient Mesopotamia
Thursday, October 27, 2005
Lecture: 6:00 pm
Speaker: Francesca Rochberg, University of California, Riverside
The rediscovery and decipherment of mathematical astronomy in ancient Mesopotamia fundamentally changed our understanding of the history of astronomy as a whole. This last development of Mesopotamian celestial science, however, belongs within a context of other “astronomies” reaching back into the second millennium B.C. This talk introduces the various parts of Mesopotamian celestial science, suggests ways of understanding its intellectual context, and places it in relation to the tradition of Western astronomy.
