I International Conference on Nation and Identity in XIX and XX Centuries Literature in English

CALL FOR PAPERS
We invite paper abstracts on nation and identity in English literatures. We encourage interdisciplinary perspectives; topics may include, but are not limited to:
identity crisis
hybrid identities
the construction of national identities
nation/identity concepts in multiethnic countries
cultural identities
gender intersection with nation and identity
media representation of nation and identity
race, class gender interact in the process of nation and/or identity formation
nation and identity concepts in the Americas/Australia
the role of State in constructing a national identity
searching for identity in history
exploring the past: the beginning of a nation
forefathers and the understanding of national character
historical novels and the illumination of national traditions
reconstructing epochs in the nation’s history through fiction / romance
enthusiasm and shame regarding the past
the British Empire: overseas expansion and conflict
jingoism and rivalry between imperial nations
masculinity and patriotism: fighting for the nation’s cause
British races challenged by the struggle for imperial might
Please send your abstract by e-mail or fax, of max. 200 words, in English or Spanish with personal and affiliation data to the conference organizing committee before 1- MAY - 2006. Proposals may be individual presentations or collective panels that relate to the overall conference theme. Proposals for papers/panels may be either in Spanish or English and should be a maximum of 20 minutes in length.
