Birmingham University’s Centre for European Languages and Cultures (CELC) is extending a second call for papers for a postgraduate conference to be held on Tuesday 20 September 2005: “Politics and Cultural Exchange in Europe”, with keynote speaker Dr Nicholas Martin, MA, DPhil, Senior Lecturer in European Intellectual History.
The conference provides an ideal opportunity for research students and staff from French, German, Italian and Hispanic departments in Britain and abroad to present work in progress. The following are guidelines for possible subjects:
literary, political or historical interaction between European countries
the influence of conflict (in and between European societies) on artistic output
gender in European politics
The conference has been made possible thanks to full Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funding, so is free to all participants. Up to 10 bursaries of £50 will be made towards the travelling expenses of those coming from overseas and up to 12 bursaries of £25 to those resident elsewhere in the UK, all on a first come first served basis.
Abstracts should be in English only and of approximately 250 words in length. Papers should be 20 minutes long and all papers given on the day will be published in CD ROM format. The final deadline for abstracts is 5 September.
