100 years ago the 1905 Aliens Act was passed, thus beginning a century of increasing legislative controls on immigration and the closing of an open door. Why was the Act passed? What are the parallels to today's debate on immigration and asylum? This one day conference will draw on a wealth of experts. Speakers include Don Flynn from the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, Michael Skapinker from the Financial Times, Professor David Cesarani of Royal Holloway College, University of London and Dr Anne Kershen, Queen Mary College, University of London.
