The NCHA solicits 250-word proposals for 25-minute papers for a conference exploring how classical antiquity and its legacy have been displayed, represented, and imagined in cultural contexts around the globe and to the present. Two major L.A. museum collections (the Huntington and the newly refurbished Getty Villa) provide a catalyst for examining how gardens, villas, and works of art have stimulated responses ranging from aesthetic contemplation to eroticized desire. Conference panels will encompass perspectives generated from both inside and outside European aesthetic traditions. The conference’s four sessions will focus on “the classical” as a site of fascination and fantasy where the past is presented and represented, studied and staged, consumed and contested.

Des propositions courtes (250 mots) de communications de 25 minutes doivent parvenir au NCHA pour ce colloque qui se propose d’examiner comment l’Antiquité classique et son héritage ont été exposés, représentés et imaginés dans différents contextes culturels de par le monde et jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Deux collections majeures des musées de Los Angeles (celles du Huntington et la Villa Getty nouvellement réaménagée) fournissent un stimulant point de départ pour analyser ce que jardins, villas et œuvres d’art ont éveillé d’échos allant de la contemplation esthétique au désir érotique. Des tables-rondes confronteront des points de vue issus des traditions esthétiques européennes et d’autres qui leur sont étrangers. Les quatre sessions du colloque mettront l’accent sur le « classique » comme espace de fascination et d’imaginaire où le passé est présenté et représenté, étudié et mis en scène, consommé et contesté.
