Texas A&M University-Commerce and Paris Junior College will host a centennial celebration in honor of William A. Owens, nationally-renowned folklorist, essayist, autobiographer, and fiction-writer. The centennial will take place on 11-9-05 and 11-10-05, with events at both Texas A&M University-Commerce and Paris Community College in Paris, TX. We seek papers either on Owens specifically, or on any of the diverse areas of interest that defined his career. Possible topics for presentation could include but are not limited to:
•Texas history and Texas folklore
•Frontier narratives as literary and historical texts
•The crossroads of folk studies and African American studies
•The state of current folklore studies
•William A. Owens as master storyteller
•Issues surrounding the preservation of Texas songs, ballads, and spirituals
•Military history, perhaps inspired by Owens’s "Eye Deep in Hell"
•Original creative fiction, poetry, or drama inspired by or paying tribute to the work of Owens as writer and scholar
