I am writing to solicit fresh contributions for a forthcoming edited volume entitled "Third World Men: An Anthology," scheduled for publication by Zed Books in Fall 2006.
"Third World Men" will provide an intimate, up-close portrait of men's lives around the "Third World," across a wide range of life experiences. In order to present the most diverse and vivid selection possible, the emphasis will be on concise accounts -- personal testimonies and firsthand portraits -- drawn from media in the developed and developing world, development-oriented NGOs, human rights reports, literary sources, and scholarly works across the social sciences and humanities. "Third World Men" seeks to make a groundbreaking contribution to the study of men and masculinity in the developing world, and it is hoped that it will find a wide audience as an undergraduate and graduate university text.
The basic structure of the book consists of a framing introduction followed by four main sections, titled "Work & Recreation," "Governance & Conflict," "Family & Sexuality," and "Ritual & Belief." At this stage of the project, I am particularly interested in contributions to the "Family & Sexuality" and "Ritual & Belief" sections. Contributions should be relatively brief and incisive -- between 500 and 2,500 words is ideal. Remember, the book emphasizes individual portraits and testimonies, rather than scholarly analysis as such, although this can play a secondary role.
I welcome original contributions -- please get in touch if you are doing work that is relevant to the project. I am also interested in reprinting previously-published material. If, while reading this, your mind turns to an article you read some time ago, an ethnography, a recent NGO report, even a favourite poem -- there is a good chance it could be included.
Please contact me at: adamj_jones@hotmail.com if you have or know of material that fits the profile of "Third World Men: An Anthology," or if you have any questions about the intended scope and content of the project.
Sincerely,
Adam Jones, Ph.D.
