Submissions are invited for possible inclusion in an edited collection on the social history of the pre-industrial Scottish family. In A Century of the Scottish People, T.C. Smout wrote, "[t]he history of the family, and of child upbringing and the place of women within and without the home, is so neglected in Scotland as to verge on becoming a historiographical disgrace." Since these words were written, family life in medieval and early modern Scotland has received limited attention. The purpose of this collection is to encourage work on the family by demonstrating the important contribution that it makes to our understanding of pre-industrial Scotland. Examples of potential themes could include, but are not limited to: childhood, motherhood, fatherhood, marriage, sexuality, servants, familial piety, youth culture, demography, family law, widowhood, family economy, kinship or masculinity. Interdisciplinary perspectives are welcome. Proposals of 300 words that explore any aspect of Scottish families in the medieval or early modern period will be considered. All abstracts will be subject to refereeing.
Editors for the project are Elizabeth Ewan (University of Guelph) and Janay Nugent (University of Lethbridge). Submissions should be received by June 15, 2005. Please send to:
