Jews and the Legacies of Empire
Central European University

May 29-31, 2005
The dissolution of the Habsburg Empire brought about a radical transformation in the social position and legal status of Jews in the successor states. While Jews were often successful in assimilating into imperial structures, they suffered new challenges with the emergence of new nation-states in post-WWI East-Central Europe. This workshop explores the legacies of the imperial past and the ways in which these legacies contributed to the social, cultural, religious and political patterns that characterized East-Central European Jewry’s adaptations to and confrontations with the new realities.
