The Tikotin Museum of Japanese Art in Haifa, Israel, is organizing a conference on Gender Identity, Performativity and Sexuality in Japanese Culture on Dec. 8-9, 2005. The conference is coming in conjunction with the exhibition, curated by Ayelet Zohar PostGender: Gender Identity, Performativity and Sexuality in Contemporary Japanese Art - an exhibition of photography, video art and performance that will take place in the museum between Sep. 17 th 2005 – Jan. 3rd 2006. Among participating artists are: Morimura Yasumasa, Sawada Tomoko, Takano Ryudai, Bubu de la Madeleine, Akira the Hustler, Ishihara Tomoaki, Miyashita Maki, Okada Hiroko, Shigeko Kubota and Yoko Ono.
The conference is aiming to broaden the subject of the exhibition by looking at the concepts and possibilities of gender performance and sexuality in Japanese culture – opening the discussion to a wider range of disciplines. We especially encourage papers which deal with philosophy, anthropology, sociology, history, literature, cultural studies etc. to participate in this conference.
