The American Studies Graduate Students’ Committee at the University of Texas at Austin invites proposals for our 2005 conference, “Defining ‘American’ Values.” In the wake of the 2004 election, many Americans cited ‘moral values’ as a key factor in their voting decisions. Why are moral values of concern to much of the American public in 2005? Do they matter in academia? This conference is designed to promote an academic exchange of ideas about a variety of values in American political, social, or cultural worlds.
As interdisciplinary work is at the core of American Studies, we encourage different methodological approaches and invite submissions from a variety of disciplinary perspectives, including but not limited to: African and African American Studies, American Studies, American Indian Studies, Anthropology, Architecture and Urban Planning, Art and Art History, Asian and Asian American Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Communication Studies, English, Education, History, Geography, Government, Journalism, Latin American Studies, Law, Mexican American Studies, Music, Philosophy, Public Affairs, Queer Studies, Radio-Television-Film, Religious Studies, Rhetoric, and Women’s Studies.
Propose individual papers only. If accepted, individual papers will be organized into panels. All panels will have moderators. To help offset the costs of the conference, there will be a $10 registration fee required for those individuals selected to participate in the conference.
To propose a paper please submit a cover page with your name and the mailing address, phone number, and email address at which you can be reached during the summer; a one-page abstract of the paper; and a detailed request for audiovisual equipment. The deadline for submissions is June 30th, 2005.
