Exhibition synopsis (Call for artworks)
Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts at Taipei National University of the Arts, Taiwan, will host a contemporary art exhibition in October 2005 as part of the 3rd “Asia-Pacific Arts Forum” series at the University. The Asia-Pacific Arts Forum is a biennial event, which includes a series of art events, such as one three-day conference, art exhibition, several concerts, dance and theatre performances.
The central theme of the exhibition revolves around the title, “Masking and Unmasking: the Art of Disguise/Disclosure in Asia-Pacific Cultures.” The exhibition aims at exploring issues in arts and cultures on disguised/undisguised, cover/uncover, masking/unmasking, coloured / monochrome, natural/artificial, and etc.. Four main themes of the Arts Forum are:
- Transformation and Impersonation – role play and identity subversion
- Political Camouflage – between masking and unmasking
- The Creative power of Ambivalence – from traditional ritual to contemporary art
- Contemporary Inspiration from Asia-Pacific Arts – identity and identification in the context of globalization
This exhibition intends to explore the ambiguous, yet rigid, and sensitive, yet systemised, existing cultural forms from different aspects, and call into question the established social hierarchy and conventions. It also attempts to stimulate debates and discussions in art and cultural production in Asia.
The Forum also wishes to promote international cultural and artistic exchanges in the area. Forms of artworks may include outdoor multi-media installation, sculpture and others. The exhibition will cover different forms of art works by artists, who were born and work in Asia, (which also includes Middle and East Asia).
Artists, who are interested in participating in the forum, must submit a CV, project proposal and cost of production to the forum committee by 4th of May 2005. The short-listed artists will be invited to participate in the artists workshop and arts forum in Taipei with a grant, which covers their return flight, accommodation and a part of artwork production cost.
