“Ways of Making and Knowing: The Material Culture of Empirical Knowledge”, a conference sponsored by the Wellcome Trust Centre for the History of Medicine at UCL, the Wellcome Trust, and the Yale Center for British Art will be held July 11-15, 2005 in London. New work in the history of material culture will be used to break down common historiographical dichotomies between craft skill and scientific knowledge, and to showcase studies demonstrating that natural knowledge flowed from engagement with natural things. Within a chronological range of Renaissance through 19th century, historians of art, science, and medicine and museum scholars will engage in a programme of lectures and hands-on demonstrations. Programme and registration are available at the web address or e-mail address provided below. Registration closes May 15, 2005.
