The Canadian Association of American Studies (CAAS) will be holding its 2005 Conference in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on October 6-9. The theme will be "America and Violence". "America", D. H. Lawrence once proclaimed, "is tense with latent violence and resistance". This description has rarely seemed more appropriate than at the present moment, when the United States is tense with the fear of terrorist violence inside its own borders, and strained by the physical and emotional costs of a violent war it is waging on the other side of the world. But the American experience has, in various ways, been a violent one from its beginnings. Proposals for papers or panels (max. 250 words) that deal with the topic of violence in American history, culture, literature, and life from any point of view are welcome. The deadline for receipt of proposals is June 15, 2005. Some appropriate areas might include:
- America at War
- Terrorism and the Responses
- Violence and Politics
- Violent Crime and Punishment
- Social Violence and/or Repression
- "Gun Culture" or "Wound Culture"
- (Mark Seltzer)
- Literary or Artistic Depictions of Violence
- Violence as an Artistic Strategy
- Violence and/or Crime in Popular Culture
- Philosophical or Sociological
- Explanations of Violence
