Since NAFTA entered into force in 1994, dynamics of agricultural production and trade have changed dramatically in the Pacific Northwest. Large-scale, export-oriented agriculture in the region is as vulnerable as ever to global business cycles, competition from low-waged producers, labor shortages, spread of pests and disease, shifting consumer tastes and preferences, among other dynamics. In a region where agriculture has been a major source of economic vitality for over a century, such changes challenge growers, related businesses, communities and social institutions whose futures are closely linked. How have they responded? What have been their successes and failures? What further changes and innovations are required to strengthen foundations for sustainable agriculture, communities, and environments in the Pacific Northwest? Papers and posters are invited from scholars, practitioners, and policymakers on a variety of related topics.
