The Newberry Library Urban History Dissertation Seminar
Call for Papers for the 2005-2006 academic year
Deadline for Submission: 1 June 2005
The Newberry Urban History Dissertation Seminar is seeking submissions for the 2005-2006 academic year. The seminar will be held at the Newberry Library in Chicago, Illinois, on the first Saturday of each month from 3 to 5pm, starting in September. The Seminar is intended for advanced doctoral candidates to submit writing related to their dissertation and receive feedback from their peers. Each month, seminar participants review a colleague's submission. Submissions are distributed to the group about two weeks in advance, who in turn provide comments and suggestions at the monthly meetings. The purpose of the seminar is to provide a comfortable, low-pressure setting for discussions of works-in-progress.
Please note that submissions will be reviewed and accepted on a first come, first served basis, and dates for presentation are assigned in the same way. Presentation proposals should include chapter abstracts and a dissertation outline, briefly describing how the chapter to be discussed fits into the larger project. Please indicate which date(s) you would prefer.
The Newberry Urban History Dissertation Seminar is a terrific opportunity to meet other graduate students undertaking similar research. We encourage participation from both presenters and discussants; it is obviously important that enough people attend the monthly sessions to adequately provide feedback for each presenter's research.
The deadline for submissions is June 1. Proposals should be e-mailed to the Seminar coordinators, Christopher Miller and Tim Lacy, at christopher.miller@marquette.edu and tlacy@luc.edu, respectively.
