The University of Oklahoma is pleased to host this symposium named in honor of Wilma Mankiller, former Chief of the Cherokee Nation. A native Oklahoman, Mankiller achieved fame as the first woman to become Chief of her tribe and as a leader of the Indian civil rights movement. She is known as a leading feminist as well as a tribal leader. Her contributions to her people and to the United States have earned her the Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award.
Speakers include Colin Calloway, Peter Iverson, Barbara Child, Laurence Hauptman, and David Edmunds. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 12 and Wednesday, April 13 at the Memorial Union at the University of Oklahoma.
