Description: The 10th European Congress for Sport History (CESH) will take place in Seville/Spain from November 2 – 5, 2005. The Congress theme will be Sport and Violence.
Violence has rocked the world not only since 9/11. The history of Europe and until very recently of Spain is a long history of violence. What is the relationship of physical education and sport to violence? Does sport prepare violence? Is it a remedy against violence? Is there something in the idea of an "Olympic truce"?
Papers (and whole sections) about the historical dimension of the connection between sport and violence particularly in Europe are very welcome; but papers relating to countries outside of Europe are also permissible, if a transfer of the experience to matters in Europe can be achieved.
There will be special sections for:
- Sport and the preparation for war
- Sport and the Civilizing Process
- Violent and Blood Sports
- Violence among spectators and Hooliganism
- Sport and Violence: What to collect and exhibit:
- Archives, Museums, Collections
- Sport and Violence in Andalucia
Any major European language is acceptable, provided the participants are ready to discuss their methodology and major finding in English, French or Spanish.
CESH encourages particularly the participation of young scholars and has three Junior Scholar Awards for the best papers by participants 35 years and under.
The local organizing Committee is headed by Juan Carlos Fernández Truán, Profesor of the University Pablo Olavide de Sevilla.
