The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission presents the Penn Symposium, “Local Heroes: Celebrating Pennsylvania’s Sports History” on Sunday, March 13, 2005 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at The State Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 North Street, Harrisburg. The Symposium is presented as part of Heritage Days 2005. Heritage Days 2005 runs from March 11 to 14 and celebrates Pennsylvania’s 324th birthday. It is the only time during the year, the fragile, original 1681 Charter granted to Pennsylvania founder William Penn by King Charles II of Great Britain is exhibited to the public.
During Heritage Days, culminating with the Penn Symposium, the Commonwealth’s rich sports tradition will be highlighted, with speakers and programming examining the importance of sports and community throughout Pennsylvania’s past, continuing to present day sports heroes.
The Keynote Speaker for the symposium is Randy Roberts of Purdue University. Professor Roberts specializes in recent U.S. history, U.S. sports history, and the history of popular culture. Roberts has authored, or co-authored several books including The Steelers Reader and Pittsburgh Sports: Stories from the Steel City.
A panel discussion on “Presenting Pennsylvania’s Sports History to the Public” will follow Professor Roberts’ keynote. Featured speakers and topics include Anne Madarasz, Heinz History Center presenting “The Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum;” Charles Hardy, West Chester University, and Jeff Silverman, Sports Illustrated, presenting “Pennsylvania’s Baseball History in Cyberspace;” and
Curt Miner, The State Museum of Pennsylvania will presenting “Outside the Track: A Social History of Horse Racing in Pennsylvania.”
