The central theme of the first international CONVENTION of Slavicist librarians in Sarajevo is: How do others see us? How is South-Eastern Europe, and Bosnia and Herzegovina in particular, represented in the collections of Western European and North American libraries.
The topics to be discussed and analyzed at the gathering are the acquisitions planning process (acquisitions policy) for Balkan/South-Eastern European library collections, and how to meet immediate user needs in Western Europe and North America, with particular emphasis on the comprehensiveness and quality of the collections, and on trends in the use of the collections in line with the principles of effectiveness.
The following questions will be addressed during discussion:
the study of the user community and its needs
acquisitions plan – collection development/management policy
the selection of library material
(demand theory; value theory; just in case; just in time)
the acquisitions process (pre-accession and accession)
This first international convention of Slavicist librarians in Sarajevo is designed to mark the start of on-going international meetings of Slavicist librarians to be held annually in Sarajevo to coincide with the Sarajevo Book Fair.
The primary objective is to provide an opportunity for representatives of foreign libraries, and in particular of their Slavicist departments, to acquaint themselves in situ with the current publishing activities of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s publishers and those of the region as a whole, which should lead to:
the increased distribution of titles from Bosnia and Herzegovina;
a greater number of foreign libraries procuring books and periodicals from Bosnia and Herzegovina’s publishers;
opportunities for representatives of foreign libraries to make direct contact with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s librarians for the purpose of direct cooperation and increased interlibrary exchange.
Date of the convention
Sarajevo, 22-24 April 2005, to coincide with the Sarajevo Book Fair. The convention will be held in the Collegium Artisticum city gallery in Sarajevo, which is immediately adjacent to the Skenderija Cultural and Sports Centre halls where the Sarajevo Book Fair is held.
