Mini-symposium on “Buying, Selling, Collecting, and Caring for Rare Medical Books”
Wednesday, February 23, 2005
6:15-8:00 PM
The College of Physicians of Philadelphia
19 South 22nd Street
Philadelphia
Bruce Ramer, MA (Antiquarian Bookseller, New York City) will speak on “Recent Trends, Controversies, and Scandals in the World of Rare Books and Manuscripts.”
Eugene Flamm, MD (Chair of Neurosurgery, Albert Einstein College of Medicine). Dr. Flamm, formerly Chair of Neurosurgery at the University of Pennsylvania, and a long-time Fellow of the College of Physicians, is regarded as one of the leading collectors of medical books in the world. He will be discussing how he built a private collection that reflects the development of his specialty – and how could not keep himself from acquiring certain items that did not fit in perfectly.
Michael Ryan, PhD (Director, Walter H., and Leonore Annenberg Rare Book & Manuscript Library, University of Pennsylvania) will comment, from a librarian’s point of view, on the presentations by Mr. Ramer and Dr. Flamm.
Please join us at 5:15 PM for the opportunity to meet the speakers at a complimentary reception, where we will be announcing the revival of the Samuel Lewis Circle, a group of book lovers organized to support the work of the College Library.
