I am interested in putting a panel together for the 2006 AHA conference on the intersections between religious identity and U.S. international relations. My own work deals with twentieth-century American Protestant missionaries in India, how their mission changed in response to Indian nationalism, and the impact of their experiences overseas on American Protestantism and international relations. Compatible proposals could address a range of issues: how religious beliefs have shaped attitudes about America's role in the world, how American religions have been influenced by international politics, how religiously-affiliated actors have influenced governmental or non-governmental intervention overseas, etc. I will happily consider alternative definitions of the topic area, depending on the proposals received.
