An international conference on 'Defeat and Memory' will be held at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, 7-9 September 2005. The aim of this conference is to examine the manner in which defeat in its military form has been understood and remembered by individuals and societies in the era of modern industrialised warfare. It will feature keynote addresses from Professor John Horne (Trinity College, Dublin) and Professor Dennis Showalter (Colorado College). Our speakers will be discussing a series of defeats in Asia, Europe and North America during the 19th and 20th centuries.
